Groww — How to Get Your API Access Token
Groww's documentation describes three ways to authenticate. This guide covers the
Access Token approach — the simplest, generated directly from your
account settings with no extra steps. It stops once you have your token.
Before You Start
- A Groww account
- An active Trading API Subscription — Groww's documentation states this must be purchased before the API can be used
Groww's documentation notes its Trading APIs currently support equity (CASH) and derivatives (FNO) only — commodities (MCX) are not available.
Step 1: Log in and open your profile settings
Log in to your Groww account, click the profile icon in the top-right corner, then click the settings (gear) icon.

Step 2: Open "Trading APIs"
In the settings navigation list, select "Trading APIs".

Step 3: Generate an Access Token
Click "Generate API keys", then select "Access Token".

Step 4: Copy your Access Token
Copy the generated Access Token. You can create, revoke, and manage all your tokens from this same page.

Mask the actual token before sharing — use a dummy value if illustrating this step.
What You Should Have Now
- Access Token — generated directly from the Trading APIs settings page
Groww's documentation also describes an "API Key and Secret" flow and a "TOTP" flow —
both alternative methods, generated from the Groww Cloud API Keys page, that require an
extra checksum/approval step to exchange for a usable token. The Access Token method
above is the direct, single-step path.
Important Limitations
- Daily expiry: Groww's documentation states the Access Token "Expires daily at 6:00 AM" — you'll need to generate a new one each day.
- Rate limits (per Groww's documentation, applied by request type, not per individual endpoint):
- Authentication (generating a token): 5/second, 30/minute
- Orders (create/modify/cancel): 10/second, 250/minute
- Live Data (quotes, LTP, OHLC): 10/second, 300/minute
- Non-trading (order status, positions, holdings, margin): 20/second, 500/minute
- The token-generation endpoint itself is additionally capped at 150 requests per 24 hours, per Groww's documentation.
- Paid subscription required before API access works at all.
🔒 Security warning: Keep your Access Token (and, if you use the
alternative flows, your API Secret) confidential. Never share them publicly. Never
include real credentials in screenshots — use dummy values or mask them.
